First Tournament of the 2011-2012 Season

The Shamrock Wrestling Club will be kicking off the season at the St. Tars Tournament held at Notre Dame High School (Niles, IL).  Pertinent information is listed below.

As usual, we are starting off the season with some gear snafus.  If you son is going to wrestle on Sunday and is eligible (see post about eligibility below), he will need the following.

  1. Singlet.  We're (suspiciously) missing a bag of singlets, so we passed out a few of them at practice today, and may have more to pass out Sunday morning at the tournament, but in case you do not end up having a singlet, don't fret, you can wrestle in a t-shirt and shorts (same as what you would wear at practice).  Just make sure it's a plain colored (or white) t-shirt without any crazy graphics on it.
  2. T-shirt and Shorts to wear over your singlet.  Assuming you have a singlet, you'll want some "warm-up clothes" which can include a T-shirt, shorts, and perhaps a sweatshirt.
  3. Wrestling shoes
  4. Headgear.  This is a MUST.  If you still need to pick one up, you can get one from any sporting goods store.
  5. $20.  This is the entrance fee for wrestlers to participate.  Family will pay the regular entrance fee at the door (which is usually $3-$5).  Wrestlers do not pay the spectator entrance fee.
So, here's the rundown.  You'll need to arrive at Notre Dame High School between 6:30AM and 7:30AM for weigh-ins.  The first thing you'll do is find Coach Frank, who will be stationed in the upper bleachers wearing Shamrock Wrestling Club gear.  You'll give Coach Frank your $20, and he will give you a weigh-in card, which you'll need to weigh-in.  Also, at this time, if you do not have a singlet, check with Coach Frank to see if he has any in your size.  Once you have your weigh-in card, you'll proceed to the weigh-in area where you'll turn in your card and weigh-in in your singlet (or t-shirt and shorts if you don't have a singlet).  After weigh-ins you may want to get a small bite to eat or hang out and relax.  At 8:15AM the team will gather with Coach Duggan to warm-up for the tournament.  We will warm-up for about 20-30 minutes.  After that you will sit with the team in the bleachers until your age group is called.

Wrestling will start around 9AM, and typically starts with the youngest wrestlers (5&6 year olds).  They will be called as a group to the "Bull-Pen" where they will be paired up in their brackets and sent out to a mat.  Coaches will be in the Bull-pen to help usher out the wrestlers to the mats and the coach them (to victory).  After the 5&6 year olds wrestle, we will move on to the 7&8's, then the 9&10, 11&12's and finally the 13&14's.  Round 1 will be done, and then we'll start all over again with Round 2.  Usually the 8 year olds and under will wrestle 2 rounds, and the 9 year old's and up will wrestle 3 rounds.
