April 3rd, 1PM Wrestling Banquet, SPHS

We will get together on April 3rd in the St. Patrick High School Gym for an end of the season celebration. We'll buy the Pizza (and yes, we'll have enough this year as long as people R.S.V.P.) and pop.  If you would like to bring anything else to share, please do.  If any of you would like to coordinate some side dishes/appetizers and possibly some "other" beverages, contact me and I'll get everyone in touch.  We will have awards for all participants based on the number of years they've been with the program.  All 1st year kids get the same award, and so on.  We will also have some special awards including our MVW (we don't play in wrestling, we wrestle).  Anyway, we'd really like to see everyone there, so we can recap the season, and prepare for next year.  You may also bring any games you'd like to play.  We'll probably have basketballs, but if you want to play bags, or football, or anything else, go ahead and bring it with you.  Feel free to bring your whole family.  We do ask, however, that you R.S.V.P. with the total number of people attending in your group so we can plan accordingly.  You can R.S.V.P. by sending an email to kcjoem@comcast.net (Joe Moore) or ryndggn@gmail.com (Ryan Duggan).  Or, you can call/text us at: (847) 508-1741 (Joe), (773) 308-5076 (Ryan).  We look forward to seeing you all there.

Shamrocks send 3 to IKWF State Finals.

The Shamrock Wrestling Club will be represented by 3 wrestlers at this weekend's State Finals at the Rockford Metro Centre in Rockford, IL. Novice wrestler, "Frankie" Trevino finished in 2nd place, while Seniors Anthony Jarvis and Wayne Sobotka both placed 3rd in their respective sectional brackets. The State tournament will take place all day Friday and Saturday. It's a fairly short trip to Rockford for anyone wishing to see the best wrestlers in the State compete for a State Championship. Complete details and schedules can be found on the IKWF web site: www.ikwf.org. Congratulations to this year's qualifiers and good luck at State!

In the Intermediate Division, 10 year old Jake Stiles capped off his season with a Sectional Championship. Intermediate wrestlers cannot qualify for the state tournament, so this marks the final tournament of the year for our 10 and under wrestlers. An excellent finish to a great season. Stiles earned his 7th Title for the year bringing his season record to 25 wins and 2 losses. Great job Jake!

Skin Diseases

Example of Ringworm infection
Ringworm is a common skin disease that tends to rear its ugly head among wrestlers.  The best defense against ringworm infections is to shower immediately after practice, every day without fail.  If you do have anything on your body that looks suspicious, you need to do the following things.  First, DO NOT COME TO PRACTICE.  Secondly, go to your doctor to have it examined and treated, if necessary.  Third, bring the IHSA skin check form to your doctor so he/she can fill it out.  You will need to present this form at weigh-ins upon request from any official.  This is especially true when you go to the kid's open or the State series, where skin checks are mandatory.  If you present yourself at a skin check with any sort of skin abnormality, it is up to the official at weigh-ins to determine if you can wrestle or not.  So, it is always best to have the skin check form completed for any sort of skin abnormality present on your body.

Picture Day, January 10, 2011 6PM

Be sure to pack your smile next week Monday for picture day.  Your son should have brought home with him tonight an order form for the pictures.  Please fill out the form with the pictures you would like and return it, along with your payment on Monday.  If you did not receive an order form, you can pick one up on Wednesday or Thursday at practice, or fill one out on Monday.  Your son will wear his competition singlet for an individual photo, and his Shamrock t-shirt and shorts for a team photo.  Make sure to have all pieces of the equipment for photos.  We will not be practicing on Monday, we will meet in the wrestling room at 6PM for photos only.

Buffalo Grove Tournament Cancelled

I guess wrestling tomorrow just wasn't meant to be.  Apparently, Buffalo Grove High School is without power, so they had to cancel their tournament.  I'm sure many people won't read this in time, but if you do, please call whoever you can to pass the word along.  Coach Moore will be making some calls now, but we want to make sure people don't make an unnecessary trip out to Buffalo Grove.  We will have regular practice next week for both levels.  See you on Tuesday.

Practice Schedule Week of 12/28/10

Big guys are practicing Tuesday and Wednesday this week 6:30PM - 8:00PM.
Little guys are practicing Tuesday only from 6:00PM - 7:15PM.
Any little guys who want to practice with the big guys on Wednesday are more than welcome.  6:30PM - 8:00PM.

SWC Tournament Cancelled - Will compete at Buffalo Grove.

We regret that we will have to cancel our tournament, originally scheduled for this Sunday, 1/2/11.  Our tournament just fell too close to the holiday to generate enough pre-registrations to make the tournament successful.  In years past, the first Sunday typically fell a few days after the 1st of the year so more people were willing to travel, but this year we weren't so lucky.  We held out hope as long as possible, but we officially cancelled it on Monday.  Bummed that you're not going to work the bull pen or weigh-ins???  Don't worry, we still have regionals to look forward to at the end of February, and we'll once again need to coordinate jobs for that tournament.  Let's just look on the bright side and see that we only have to work one tournament this year, instead of the usual two.

There is another tournament that will take place on the 2nd, and we were able to get in at the last minute due to our extenuating circumstance.  So, we will be traveling to Buffalo Grove High School to wrestle on Sunday January 2nd.  Tournament details follow below.

Buffalo Grove High School
1100 W. Dundee Road
Buffalo Grove, IL

Weigh-ins:  Sunday 6:30AM - 8:00AM
Wrestling begins at 9AM.

Please be aware that 10 year olds and younger will wrestle in the main gym while 11 year old + will wrestle in the field house.  This means that 8 and under and 11&12 will wrestle right away at 9AM.  Also, there is limited seating available in the field house, so the organizers are allowing people to bring in folding/lawn chairs to sit.

See Coach Frank for your weigh-in card and to pay your $15 entrance fee.

*IMPORTANT* Parent Meeting Tuesday 12/21/10

We will have a mandatory Parent Meeting on Tuesday 12/21/10 at 6:30PM in the Cafeteria (near the wrestling room).  We will be discussing the necessary jobs to be covered for our upcoming tournament.  Please make sure at least one Parent/Guardian is present.  Our tournament can only run with the help of our parents.  We especially need the help of our veteran parents to help take charge.  You know what needs to be done, so help us organize so we can spend our time coaching the kids.

12/19/10 Tournament: Maine East High School

St. Tars Tournament Results

Congratulations to all who participated at the season opener at Notre Dame High School today.  In all, the wrestlers showed great promise for a successful year.  We have lots to work on at practice still, but a good foundation was demonstrated today upon which can easily build.  Special recognition is given to our lone champ, 10 year old, Jake Stiles, who finished the day 3-0 with two falls.  In addition, we compiled four 2nd place finishes, ten 3rd place finishes, two 4th place finishers, and three 6th place finishers.  In total we had 22 wrestlers participate.  The key to making progress in the sport is to wrestle as many matches as you can, and these 22 boys are now on the right path.  See you all Tuesday.

1st Tournament Sunday, 12/5/10 Notre Dame High School

The Shamrocks will compete at the St. Tarcissus Wrestling Tournament at Notre Dame High School on Sunday.  Weigh-ins will take place from 6:30AM until 8:00AM.  You should plan to arrive at Notre Dame before 7:30AM the latest.  See Coach Frank when you arrive for your weigh-in card and to pay your $15 entrance fee.  You will need to weigh-in with your competition singlet on, so make sure you have it ready to go ahead of time.  Also, remember to bring your T-shirt, Shorts, and Warm-ups as well as your wrestling shoes and a properly fitted headgear.  If you do not have the necessary gear, please let us know as soon as possible.  The team will begin its warm-ups at 8:15AM and wrestling will start at 9AM.  Wrestling typically starts with the 8 year old and younger group and then goes up through the age groups (9&10, 11&12, 13&14).  You will wrestle at least 2 matches, and possibly 3.  We anticipate finishing around 3PM.  You should also pack some snacks or a lunch, or bring some cash for the concession stands so you can re-fuel between your matches. Only those wrestlers who signed up on the Registration day before the season will be able to wrestle. If you signed up after the season started, you're wrestling card will not be processed for another week or two. Up-to-date info on eligible wrestlers can be found on the IKWF web site at www.ikwf.org. A link to the North Chicago Teams is available here. Simply find the Shamrock Wrestling Club, and then find your name. If you're on the list, you're eligible, if you're not, your card has not been processes yet.

Parent Meeting, Tuesday, 11/23/10, 6:30PM, outside the wrestling room

We will have a parent meeting next week Tuesday (11/23/10) at 6:30PM for parents of both novice and elite wrestling groups.  We ask that at least one parent/guardian for each wrestler attend.  We will meet outside the wrestling room at 6:30 and hopefully find a classroom or the cafeteria to sit down and discuss plans for this year's Shamrock Wrestling Tournament, hosted at St. Patrick High School the 1st Sunday in January 2011.  We will need the assistance of each family to make our tournament a success.  There are many ways to help out, and we will talk about the needs on Tuesday.

Season is under way.

First practice last Thursday went well.  We're looking forward to the new season, with lots of returning wrestlers, and some new faces as well.  Just a reminder that it's never too late to invite your friends to practice.  As you know (or will soon find out) wrestling is a great sport and helps you become a better all around athlete.  We begin our regular practice schedule today, with the novice/younger guys starting at 6PM in the Gym balcony, and the Elite/older guys starting at 6:30PM in the Wrestling room.  Make sure you're ready to go promptly at your starting time.  Novice wrestlers have 7 practices until the 1st tournament, and Elite wrestlers have 10.  Let's make them count.
